Tips for taking card payments

These tips have been produced for operators that accept card payments, either on the bus or when using the Transportme™ operator portal. More information can be found by visiting the stripe website or PCI Security Standards Council website

Never accept a card if:

  • The card is not recognised by the pax device installed on the bus.
  • The card expiry date has passed.
  • The card or the signature has been visibly altered or tampered with.
  • The card is damaged.

If any of these occur, ask the customer for another form of payment.

You should also:

  • Never record the card number or other card details in any form or system other than the specific screens in the  Transportme™ operator portal.
  • Never ask a customer to reveal their PIN.
  • Never allow a customer to enter their PIN or tap their contactless card until the transaction amount is displayed on the screen, and if required, they are prompted to enter their PIN.
  • Never allow a customer to enter the card details in the  Transportme™ operator portal. This should be completed by the operator.
  • Be careful when processing manually keyed transactions to ensure the correct details are entered.

If a transaction is ‘declined’, ask for an alternate form of payment.

Protecting your pax device on the bus:

  • When unattended ensure the vehicle is locked.
  • Do not disclose the pax device or  Transportme™ driver application password to anyone.
  • If the pax device is damaged or could have been tampered with, seek further guidance from  Transportme™ before processing further payments.

Organisational tips:

  • Ensure staff are trained in how to use the pax device or take payments through the  Transportme™ operator portal.
  • Run anti-virus software on your computers and devices and keep it up to date.
  • Ensure computers and devices have appropriate access controls and login detail are not shared between staff.
  • If staff leave your organisation, ensure their access is removed.
